Start with the city centre and its shopping arcades, or allow a separate outing for the site of Sendai Castle. Matsushima is best treated as a half-day or longer excursion using regional rail, with time for a walk around the bay.
Where to go next by train
Tokyo lies south on the Tohoku Shinkansen. Hayabusa and Yamabiko have different stopping patterns and journey times. Northbound destinations may require a specific portion of a coupled train, so read the car number and destination display.
