Main rail gateway

Kanazawa Station is the city’s main intercity rail gateway.

Arriving and getting into the city

Kanazawa Station is the Hokuriku Shinkansen gateway. The historic districts and Kenrokuen garden are farther into the city; use local buses, a taxi or a planned walk. Allow time for finding the correct bus stop outside the station.

A practical first day

Combine Kenrokuen with the castle park, then choose either Higashi Chaya or the Nagamachi district. Omicho Market works well as a separate food stop. Rain and winter weather can make a compact itinerary more comfortable than a long walk between every district.

Where to go next by train

Tokyo is reached by Hokuriku Shinkansen services such as Kagayaki and Hakutaka. Travel towards Kyoto or Osaka usually involves a change at Tsuruga between the Shinkansen and a limited-express service; do not assume a single direct train.

Local planning tip

Kagayaki is all-reserved. Check the actual train and seat type in your search instead of planning around an unreserved carriage.

Tickets, bags and your departure day

Check your date, exact station, train and passenger numbers before paying. A reserved seat is assigned during ticketing; a window or adjacent-seat request is not a confirmed seat. Keep your issued boarding instructions offline, arrive around 30 minutes early at an unfamiliar station, and check the departure display before joining a platform queue. Luggage storage and local transfers may need separate arrangements.
