Start with three measurements
Add the height, width and depth of each suitcase, including wheels and handles. For example, 75 + 50 + 30 cm totals 155 cm, while 80 + 55 + 35 cm totals 170 cm. Measure the packed bag rather than relying on an airline label such as large or check-in size. The rule concerns the combined dimensions, not only the longest side.
Size bands at a glance
- Up to 160 cm: normally no oversized-baggage reservation on the affected lines; store the item safely.
- Over 160 cm to 250 cm: reserve the appropriate luggage arrangement on Tokaido, Sanyo and Kyushu Shinkansen services.
- Over 250 cm: not accepted under the standard allowance; arrange a different transport or delivery option.
How much can you bring?
The general JR allowance is up to two qualifying pieces per traveller, normally up to 30 kg each and no more than 2 m in length, with combined dimensions up to 250 cm. Small personal items are treated separately. Check special-item rules for bicycles, musical instruments, sporting equipment, strollers and mobility aids. Two pieces of luggage do not automatically mean two reserved storage spaces.
Request the space when you book
Choose a fare that offers an oversized-luggage request and enter the number of qualifying items, not the number of people. On JpRail, you can request up to two items per booked passenger. This is a request until ticketing confirms the arrangement; if the product does not offer the option, select another suitable fare or contact support before payment.
At the station and on board
Allow extra walking time with heavy bags. Use the storage associated with your assigned seat or follow staff instructions. The area behind the last row is not automatically free for anyone to use. Keep handles and straps secure, do not block doors and retrieve your belongings before arrival. Travelling without a required reservation can lead to an operator charge and staff-directed storage.
Other Shinkansen lines and alternatives
The same reservation system does not apply to every Japanese train. Hokuriku and Tohoku services have their own storage arrangements. When the available space does not suit your bags, consider hotel-to-hotel luggage delivery and carry an overnight bag. Check delivery lead times, destination acceptance and excluded valuables before sending anything.
